Aerating Your Lawn – The First Step in a Weed Free Lawn

    Aerate LawnLess Chemicals, Less Weeds

The secret ingredient for a lush, healthy lawn: aerate lawn.  In today’s world, we are becoming more aware of what we are putting in our bodies, as well as what we are putting on our lawns.  Less chemicals mean a safer environment for you and your family, but it doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice that beautiful lawn.

Soil Compaction Leads to Less Oxygen

A lawns best natural defense against weeds is a dense root system.  The more roots your lawn has, the less chance weeds have of becoming established in your lawn.

But over the course of a season, your lawn takes a beating from constant foot traffic.  Compaction sets in, and the soil's natural air pockets become compressed, eliminating oxygen that grass needs to complete their metabolic process.  Without that oxygen, your lawns roots thin leading to bare spots and thin grass.

    Aerating Your Lawn

Core aeration is the best way to re-establish these air pockets and deliver needed nutrients to the soil, leading to dense root growth.  Aerating your lawn not only establishes pockets for oxygen, but also provides areas for your roots to grow into.  The cores that are left over, dissolve and become nutrients for your lawn.

    When to Aerate Lawn?

Core aerations are often performed in the spring and fall.   Aerating in Ohio must be done before spring weeds germinate, typically in March, or in the fall when the weather cools and the weeds have finished growing for the year, typically in late October.  Dandelions are an excellent indicator for when to aerate your lawn.  If you see them, don’t aerate!
