Soon it'll be spring in Columbus, and your lawn will be attacked by weeds. Now is the time to start preparing, and planning your defense. So to get you ready, we'll take a look at the 3 best ways to prevent weeds in your lawn this spring.
Now of course the best way to to prevent weeds throughout the season is to have a comprehensive lawn care package that will provide controlled treatment throughout the season. These programs are created to not only provide food for your lawn throughout the season, but to also provide comprehensive weed control as well.
However, if you're determined to fight your own cause, we talked to Weed Pro's Columbus branch manager to find out his top 3 ways to prevent weeds.
1. Healthy Lawns - “A healthy lawn is your best defense against weeds” says Brad Guggenbiller from Weed Pro Columbus. And he is right! There are a few things that you need to do to maintain a healthy lawn:
a. Proper Watering - Watering is often overlooked due to the damp spring, however it is an important aspect because, like humans, grass needs to be hydrated to grow. Of course you don’t want to drown your lawn with excess water, so strive for about 1 inch of water (between rain and your sprinkler) per week.
b. Aeration - You want to aerate your lawn because it provides your lawn with oxygen so it can breathe. Aeration also allows the water, fertilizer, and nutrients to move through your soil. (More information on aeration see article “7 reasons why you need to aerate your lawn”)
c. A Great Feeding Schedule - Fertilizing is important because it increases the density of your lawn. A thick lawn is better equipped to choke out weeds. Not to mention, most fertilization applications come with weed control to further keep the weeds out. Fertilization makes your grass look great and grow at a healthy rate.
d. Keeping pests (insects/disease) out of your lawn - If you have a lawn disease or insects infesting your lawn, this not only affects the appearance of your lawn, it can affect the health as well. Some insects can devastate your lawn (beyond repair) in a matter of days.
2. Pre-emergent Crabgrass Preventer - This should be applied in the spring. Pre-emergent is the first defense against crabgrass and some other weeds. Learn more about pre-emergent weed control by checking out THIS ARTICLE.
3. Spraying weeds as they Emerge - Clearly you want to tackle the problem before it gets worse. So by spraying the weeds as they emerge, you will kill them more quickly and help prevent them from spreading.
Everyone wants a lush, green carpet-looking lawn. Keeping weeds out is the first step towards a uniform appearance. Follow these tips and you’ll soon be the envy of your neighborhood.
