5 Spring Lawn Care Mowing Tips for a Healthy Lawn

spring lawn care mowing tipsIt's hard to believe that something so simple as mowing can have such a huge effect on the overall health of our lawn. As hard as it is to believe, it's completely true! That's why Weed Pro has you covered with our top 5 mowing tips for proper spring lawn care!

    1. Proper Mowing Height Can Prevent Disease - Just think of it like properly brushing your teeth. If you follow the directions of your dentist and make sure to brush your gums, teeth and roof of your mouth the right way and number of times, you can prevent teeth decay and cavities. So it's not hard to believe that mowing your lawn at the right height can keep your lawn from yellowing & stress related diseases. In the spring it's important never to mow more than a 1/3 of the blade off. So that means you'll be mowing sometimes twice a week to keep it at a proper height of 3-4". Just remember: Proper Height = Proper Life for your Grass!

    2. Boy, That's a Sharp Blade! - Dull scissors can lead to tearing and ripping of any paper or material project you may be working on. Using dull tools can ruin your project! Cutting your grass with dull blades causes ripping of the grass tissue, which leads to yellow tips, and stressed turf. Stress turf leads to lawn disease! So sharpen your blades every 8-10 cuttings to keep them cutting clean!

    3. Mow Often During the Spring - Mowing once every two weeks in the spring will cause you to mow too much of the grass blade off, so tip Number 1 & 3 go hand and hand. Mowing more often can help you keep your lawn at a proper height (3-4") without cutting too much of the blade.

    4. Be Different! Mix Up Your Patterns - There's nothing like seeing a freshly mowed lawn with straight lines. However, mowing it the same way every time can have a negative effect on your lawn. Those cool lines created are caused by the "uptake" force as the mower passes over the area. It forces the grass to "lay" down a certain direction, allowing the sun to bounce off the blades differently, causing "stripes" to appear in your lawn. It's not good for your lawn to receive light on only one side, so mix up the way you mow your grass, allowing for the lawn to lay different directions. Get creative and make as many cool designs as you can! It's good for you and your lawn!

    5. Don't Cut Your Lawn When It's Wet! - Besides the grass clippings becoming tangled and clumped in your mowers catcher, mowing when it's wet is hard on your soil. Too much weight on the surface of your lawn when it's wet can lead to soil compaction which, unless properly aerated, can lead to thinning, unhealthy grass.
