    Proper Watering Habits

Posted by: Robert Palmer on June 18, 2021

In the summer we all want to be able to use our lawn as often as possible, whether that is enjoying a nice cookout, sunbathing, or just playing outside with family and friends. Because of the many activities that go on in the summer months, a healthy green lawn is something to strive for.

When it comes to treating your lawn, a regular watering schedule is one of the most important things.

    How To Water?

Watering your lawn correctly will not only help it grow to be thick and healthy but will prevent lawn disease and damage that can be caused by insects as well. Although there are other details to keep in mind, frequency and duration are the two most important.

As temperatures begin to exceed 70 degrees you will want to make sure your lawn is getting 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. This is vital to your lawn's overall health and color. Watering your lawn less frequent is the best. You want to try and keep your watering schedule to about 2 times a week for the best results.

You also want to be sure that you are giving your lawn a deep soak each time so that the water gets a few inches deep in the root system, unless you have a sprinkler system set up to do so. If you do have a system set up, make sure they are serviced and ready before the season starts.

    When To Water?

We encourage that you water in the morning before the sun is at its peak temperatures because this gives your lawn time to absorb the moisture deep down to promote root growth.

If you water later in the evening your lawn will not absorb enough water in the root system and the moisture will leave it damp. A lawn that is too damp encourages fungus and other problems like lawn disease to grow.

As we get into the colder months, a deep but infrequent watering schedule should still be applied. You can begin to slowly reduce your watering into the winter months.

    Watering Techniques

There are multiple ways you can water your lawn, each having their own set of benefits. If you have a smaller yard, you can use a handheld hose that is able to reach all areas in the lawn. This method lets you be in control of which areas are being watered and for how long.

Another popular method is having a sprinkler or irrigation system. This watering system is helpful because it does the watering for you. You can schedule the days of the week you want your lawn watered as well as the duration.

Proper watering habits are vital for your lawns overall health. Whether you use a hands-on approach or an irrigation system that makes it easier for your lifestyle, if your yard is receiving the correct nutrients, you’ll find that getting your lawn to be that luscious green color can be simple with just an extra step or two.

    Did You Water Enough?

You want to be sure not to under or over water your lawn because it can be just as damaging as not watering at all. You can tell if you watered enough by walking on it. If you walk across the lawn and you can see each footprint or if the grass blades start to wilt, this is a sign that you have not watered enough.

If you over water your lawn you can easily tell by how damp your grass is. Before watering again make sure you check your lawn, and if it is still damp do not water.
