Fall is a great season- the leaves are turning colors, the weather isWhy_Are_My_Shoes_Turning_Orange.jpg getting cooler, and everything is themed around pumpkins. With being able to enjoy outside without the humid weather, you spend more time outdoors on your lawn. However, when you return inside, you may notice an orange tint on your shoes. What is this from and more importantly, how do you get it off? Weed Pro has all of these answers and more.

    What is causing this?

With the changing of the seasons, your lawn is at an increased risk for many different types of lawn disease. The culprit for turning your shoes orange is a lawn disease called Lawn Rust. This disease is a result of stress on the lawn and a lack of nitrogen in the plant. It attacks the blades of the grass and causes orange-brown specks on your lawn. The reddish-yellow “dust” can usually be easily rubbed off of the infected turf giving it the look of rust. This is what is giving your shoes an orange tint from walking through the grass.

How do I get it off my shoes?

You have a couple options when cleaning your shoes to remove the rust-like stain.

    • Take them to a professional- If you invested in your shoes and do not want to risk ruining them, take them to a professional cleaner to have the job done.
    • Lemon Juice- Make a cleaning mixture by combining lemon juice and salt. Make sure you test in an inconspicuous area first to see how the shoe material will react. Apply the mixture to the stain and place in the sun. Moisten regularly with lemon juice until the stain disappears and brush off residual salt.
    • Plain White Vinegar- This is another option to try to remove the rust stains from your shoes. Like the above option with lemon juice, test it first on a small, inconspicuous potion of the shoe first to see the reaction. Simply apply to the shoe with a clean white cloth.
